species. Similar findings have previously been reported for M. piperita (Bricout & Paupardin, 1975) and M. rotundifolia (Bricout et al., 1978). Many of the calluses accumulate only the early precursors of the monoterpenes (namely geraniol, linalol and lavandulol), but some species give rise to cultures that accumulate monoterpenes characteristic of the intact plant. For example, cell lines from M. spicata x suaueolens accumulate carvone (the major terpene component of both the intact plant and the parent M. spicata) and sesquiterpenes. Maximum accumulation occurs in late exponential phase cells, but accumulation is appreciably higher in liquid suspension cultures than in the corresponding calluses. Supplementation of the growth medium with citric, fumaric, malic or pyruvic acids leads to a general, but small, enhancement of monoterpene accumulation. In some instances,

While this Article was undergoing peer review, Salim et al. (2013), Asada et al. (2013) and Salim et al. (2014) published individual steps of the (seco)iridoid biosynthesis pathway in Catharanthus roseus, including the molecular and biochemical characterization of 7-deoxyloganic acid hydroxylase, 7-deoxyloganetic acid glucosyl transferase and 7-deoxyloganetic acid synthase, which are in agreeme...

Biosynthesis of Oleoside-, 10-Hydroxyoleoside- and Ligustaloside-Type Glucosides from Secologanin

(1)-type [e.g. oleuropein (2)], 10-hydroxyoleoside (3)-type [e.g. 10-acetoxyoleuropein (4)] and ligustaloside (5)-type secoiridoid glucosides [e.g. ligustalosides A, B (5a, 5b)] were found in oleaceous plants and their hypothetical biosynthetic pathway was proposed as depicted in Fig. 1. Later, secologanoside (6)-type [e.g. oleuroside (7)] and 8epi-kingiside (8)-type glucosides [e.g. 8-epi-king...

Iridoid-specific glucosyltransferase from Gardenia jasminoides.

Iridoids are one of the most widely distributed secondary metabolites in higher plants. They are pharmacologically active principles in various medicinal plants and key intermediates in the biosynthesis of monoterpenoid indole alkaloids as well as quinoline alkaloids. Although most iridoids are present as 1-O-glucosides, the glucosylation step in the biosynthetic pathway has remained obscure. W...

Iridoid glucosides from Veronica hederifolia.

A new iridoid glucoside, urphoside A, and six known iridoid glucosides, pikuroside, aucubin, veronicoside, catalposide, amphicoside, and verminoside, were isolated from Veronica hederifolia together with a known megastigmane glucoside, 3-hydroxy-5,6-epoxy-beta-ionol-9-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside, and a hexitol, dulcitol. The structures of the isolated compounds were established by the extensive 1D...
